Trekking the endangered mountain gorillas is one of the top attractions/activities in Uganda that most tourists/travelers always yearn for, annually. However, here are some of the few things you need to know about gorilla trekking in the world’s prime gorilla refuge – Bwindi Impenetrable, southwestern Uganda, as you plan your gorilla trekking trip:
A Uganda Gorilla Permit:
Gorilla trekking in Uganda, where Bwindi nestles, is cheaper than gorilla trekking in Rwanda – Uganda’s major competitor in gorilla safaris. A Uganda gorilla permit costs US$ 600, compared to that of Rwanda which costs US$ 1500. Another thing to note is that Uganda also holds more mountain gorillas than its two competitors – Rwanda and DR Congo.
Gorilla permits in Uganda are bought at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices, which as a visitor you are highly advised to book in advance and through an authorized local tour operator like NATURE ADVENTURE UGANDA which will purchase the permit on your behalf prior to your arrival. Booking a gorilla trekking permit through a local operator you will also be offered packaged deals that include accommodation, transport, food, and permits to save you a lot of time when booking.
Where to Trek Mountain Gorillas in Uganda:
It is to be noted that Uganda boasts over 60% of the total mountain gorillas left in the world residing in its two gorilla parks; Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, all found in the country’s southwestern region.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi takes place in its four sectors, which include Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo sectors. The four sectors consist of 20 habituated gorilla families. Meanwhile, Mgahinga comprises of only two habituated gorilla families (Nyakagezi and Hirwa), that are open to trekkers. It’s better to book your accommodation where your gorilla trekking permit is issued or ask your accommodation for assistance in getting permits.
Duration of a gorilla trek:
The best time to go gorilla trekking is during the dry season (peak season) as the terrain will be easier to navigate. This will be around June to August, and then January to February. As these creatures (mountain gorillas) are wild animals, the guides have to locate where they have gone each day, so finding them can take anywhere from one to five hours. The treks are at times mildly difficult, so I recommend being in good physical condition and health to maneuver the terrain and enjoy the trekking experience.
What to wear for a gorilla trekking session:
-A good pair of hiking shoes with a high ankle and good grip
-Hiking gaiters or long hiking socks are recommended through the thick bush and to avoid those biting ants!
– Wear long pants with a long-sleeved shirt in neutral colors. Lightweight and waterproof safari clothes are best. Go for greens, khakis or dark colors. Layers will be vital as the altitude changes, one minute you’re cold and next you’re sweating!
-A rain jacket as it may just start pouring and a small good backpack that can hold your water energy bars, camera and lunch.
-Sunscreen and Insect repellent with DEET
-Walking Stick (sold at the starting point)
-Binoculars are always a good idea
-Gardening gloves are also a better option, as these might also come in handy if you grab onto trees and plants when you hike, as some might have tiny thorns on them.
